Build a Wooden Bookshelf: Your First Furniture Project

A simple three-shelf bookshelf is one of the most rewarding intermediate woodworking projects. This design uses 18 mm pine plywood for the shelves and sides, with a thin plywood back panel for rigidity. The finished shelf is approximately 80 cm wide × 100 cm tall × 25 cm deep — perfect for paperbacks, school books, or display items.

What You’ll Need

• 18 mm pine plywood sheet — 1 × 1.2 m (for sides and shelves)
• 6 mm plywood — 80 × 100 cm for the back panel
• Pocket hole jig (Kreg mini or similar) OR wood dowels and glue
• 1.5″ pocket screws (if using pocket hole jig)
• Sandpaper 80, 120, 180-grit
• Wood filler
• Paint or varnish
• Circular saw or hand saw
• Drill and bits
• Tape measure, square, clamps
• Anti-tip wall anchor strap

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut the parts: 2 side panels at 25 × 100 cm. 3 shelves at 25 × 80 cm. 1 back panel at 80 × 100 cm (from 6 mm ply). Mark all pieces clearly.
2. Sand all faces: Sand flat faces to 180-grit before assembly — far easier than sanding assembled furniture.
3. Drill pocket holes: Use the pocket hole jig to drill two holes at each end of all three shelves (underside face). These will accept screws into the side panels.
4. Assemble the carcass: Stand one side panel on the floor. Position the top shelf flush with the top and the bottom shelf flush with the bottom. Clamp each and drive pocket screws. Add the middle shelf at your preferred height. Stand up the assembly and add the second side panel.
5. Attach the back: Square the carcass (measure diagonals — they should be equal). Nail or staple the 6 mm back panel to the rear edges. This locks the square permanently.
6. Fill and finish: Fill pocket holes and any gaps with wood filler. Sand to 180-grit. Paint or stain.
7. Wall anchor: Secure to the wall with an anti-tip strap attached to a stud — essential for safety, especially with children in the house.

Safety Notes

• Unsecured bookshelves are a tip-over hazard — always anchor to the wall.
• Wear eye protection and hearing protection when using power tools.
• Ensure the shelf is on a level floor before marking shelf positions.

Tips & Troubleshooting

• Check for square after every assembly step — it’s much easier to correct at each stage than at the end.
• Use a spirit level to confirm shelves are horizontal after the back panel goes on.
• Paint the interior of the shelf a different (darker) colour than the outside for a designer look.
