Folding Plywood Lap Desk

A lap desk that holds your device at an angle prevents the neck strain of looking down at a flat surface for hours. This design uses two plywood panels connected by a piano hinge — the main writing surface and a folding leg that holds the angle. A small ledge prevents your tablet or book from sliding off. The whole thing folds flat and fits in a backpack.

What You’ll Need

• 12 mm birch plywood — two panels: 40×30 cm (main surface) and 40×20 cm (support leg)
• Piano hinge (stainless, 40 cm length) + short screws
• Wooden dowel or small piece of timber for the angle stop
• Small lip strip (20 mm × 10 mm × 40 cm) for the device ledge
• Sandpaper 80, 120, 180-grit
• Sanding sealer + varnish, or paint
• Drill, countersink bit, screwdriver
• Optional: non-slip foam pad or cork sheet for the underside

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut panels: Main surface 400×300 mm. Support leg 400×200 mm. Cut clean, square edges with a circular saw and guide or at a timber merchant.
2. Sand all faces: Progress through 80, 120, 180-grit on all faces and edges. Round all sharp corners slightly on the 180-grit pass.
3. Attach the piano hinge: Lay both panels flat, long edges touching. Centre the piano hinge along the shared long edge. Pre-drill with a countersink bit and screw down. Test that the hinge opens and closes smoothly.
4. Add the device ledge: On the main panel, measure about 50 mm from the lower edge (the edge closest to you when in use). Glue and pin the 20×10 mm strip horizontally — this prevents your book or tablet sliding off when the desk is angled.
5. Add the angle stop: Open the lap desk to about 110–120°. Cut a short length of dowel to hold this angle when pressed between the two panels’ interior faces. A simple hook-and-eye catch on each side locks it open and snaps it shut.
6. Finish: Apply one coat sanding sealer, sand lightly when dry with 220-grit, then two coats of gloss or satin varnish.
7. Add non-slip base: Stick a sheet of cork or non-slip mat to the underside of the support leg so it doesn’t slide off your lap.

Safety Notes

• Use a guide rail when cutting plywood with a circular saw to ensure straight cuts and avoid kickback.
• Wear eye protection when sanding — fine plywood dust is a respiratory irritant; use a dust mask.

Tips & Troubleshooting

• If the hinge binds when folding, the knuckle may be proud of the panel surface — chisel a shallow mortise (recess) for it to sit in.
• Personalise with a wood-burned design or vinyl sticker on the top surface.
• Attach a small cable clip to the side for routing your charger cable neatly.
