Wall-Mounted Wooden Key Holder
This key holder mounts to your wall near the entrance door and keeps keys organised. The design uses a single pine board, screw-in cup hooks, and two keyhole hangers so it can be removed from the wall without leaving marks. Adding a small paint or stain finish makes it look far more expensive than it is.
What You’ll Need
- Pine board — 60 × 10 cm, 15 mm thick
- 5 × screw-in cup hooks (brass or white)
- 2 × keyhole mounting brackets (with wall screws and plugs)
- Sandpaper (80, 120, 180-grit)
- Paint or wood stain + clear varnish
- Pencil, ruler, tape measure
- Drill and 2 mm bit
- Hand saw (if board needs cutting to length)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cut and sand: Cut the board to 60 cm if it isn’t already. Sand all faces and edges progressing through 80, 120, and 180-grit. Round off sharp corners slightly on the 180-grit pass.
- Mark hook positions: Along the bottom edge, mark five evenly spaced points (first at 5 cm from each end, then divide remaining space into four equal gaps). Mark 2 cm up from the bottom edge at each point.
- Pre-drill hook holes: At each marked point, drill a 2 mm pilot hole to prevent splitting. Screw in the cup hooks by hand.
- Attach keyhole brackets: On the back face, attach the two keyhole mounting brackets 5 cm from each end, centred top-to-bottom. These allow the board to hang from two wall screws and be lifted off easily.
- Finish: Apply stain or paint. Two coats of varnish gives a durable, wipe-clean surface. Allow full drying time (check tin label) before mounting.
- Mount: Mark two wall points matching the bracket spacing. Drill, plug, and screw into the wall. Hang the board.
Safety Notes
- When drilling into walls, check first for hidden pipes and cables using a detector.
- Use the correct wall plugs for your wall type (plasterboard vs solid masonry).
Tips & Troubleshooting
- For a rustic look, use a dark walnut stain and black iron hooks.
- Write labels under each hook in pencil before staining, then go over with a fine-tip wood-burning pen after finishing.
- Add a small floating shelf above the hook board for an inbox tray or small plant pot.
